The Study of Contemporary Music Trends will introduce and explore the roots of contemporary American music. This course will focus on the social, technological, and artistic trends that helped create and shape music of the 1920s through the 1970s. Learners will explore various genres and periods of music, including the early development of rock and roll in the 1950s, the evolution of popular music, the British Invasion of the 1960s, and the many "mutations" of rock music in the 1970s.

Unit 1: Essential Content and Skills

  • Examine the importance and value of studying the history and development of contemporary music. 
  • Explore the three main categories of music. 
  • Recognize the three types of trends that influence the continuing evolution of American popular music. 
  • Analyze, compare, and contrast the different styles that represent the roots of contemporary music. 
  • Discover some of the important artists from the worlds of gospel, Tin Pan Alley, blues, jazz, country, big band, and rhythm and blues.

  • Evaluate the power and popularity of the human voice as a musical instrument.
  • Examine the continued development of contemporary music in the 1950s, including the technological, social, and artistic trends that influenced this development. 
  • Explore some of the styles of music developed during this time period. 
  • Discover some of the artists associated with this period. 
  • Analyze, compare, and contrast the different styles of music.

Unit 3: Essential Content and Skills

  • Identify the influence the Beatles had on American music.
  • Examine the continued development of contemporary music in the 1960s, including the technological, social, and artistic trends that influenced this development. 
  • Explore some of the styles of music developed during this time period. 
  • Discover some of the artists associated with this period. 
  • Analyze, compare, and contrast the different styles of music. 

Unit 4: Essential Content and Skills

  • Examine the continued development of contemporary music in the 1970s, including the technological, social, and artistic trends that influenced this development. 
  • Examine how social, artistic, and technological trends influenced the evolution of disco.
  • Explore some of the styles of music developed during this time period. 
  • Discover some of the artists associated with this period. 
  • Analyze, compare, and contrast the different styles of music.
