The Lincoln World Language Exploration courses are online courses for elementary students that use an interactive system to deliver beginning language elements. The goal of these courses is to introduce students to the most basic elements of each language (including letters, numbers, accents, common nouns, and basic articles) in ways that are both fun and educational.

Exploring Spanish is an introduction to Spanish language and culture. Students will learn basics such as greetings, the alphabet, numbers, and colors. Additionally, students will use the Spanish language to communicate ideas and to describe themselves and the people and things around them. They will express preferences and carry on simple conversations. Although Exploring Spanish focuses mainly on the Spanish language, cultural aspects are integrated throughout. The purpose of Exploring Spanish is to spark an interest in the language while providing a base of knowledge for communication





Course Objectives

 Unit 1: Essential Content and Skills

  • Locate and identify regions in the U.S. where Spanish is spoken.
  • Examine reasons for studying a foreign language.
  • Recognize Spanish heritage words that have become part of English vocabulary.
  • Recognize and correlate English and Spanish titles, respond to greetings, and practice introductions.
  • Recognize and repeat the letter names of A–Z in the Spanish alphabet.   
  • Recall and apply the verb ser in the present tense yo conjugation.
  • Identify parts of speech in English and Spanish.
  • Recall and apply the verb ser in the present tense nosotros conjugation.
  • Differentiate and form singular and plural nouns and verb forms.
  • Apply descriptive nouns and adjectives in masculine, feminine, singular, and plural forms.

Unit 2: Essential Content and Skills

  • Identify and describe friends and family.
  • Apply the subject pronouns yo and nosotros.
  • Compare masculine and feminine nouns and their endings.
  • Apply the subject pronouns él and ella.
  • Investigate family values in Hispanic culture.
  • Use the possessive adjective mi in describing family.
  • Recognize and recall words describing professions, and explore the uses of Spanish in various professions.
  • Apply gender and number agreement with adjectives.
  • Apply first-person, second-person, and third-person forms of ser.
  • Recall and apply the names of the numbers 0–20 in Spanish.
  • Apply the yo form of the verb tener to describe family.

Unit 3: Essential Content and Skills

  • Identify and describe the rooms in a house.
  • Describe the colors of objects using the verb ser.
  • Interpret a Spanish folksong.
  • Use the verbs ser and tener to describe family pets.
  • Discover animals of South America.
  • Identify articles of clothing.
  • Apply gender and number agreement with adjectives.
  • Apply the verb gustar to express likes and dislikes.
  • Recall and apply food vocabulary, and compare foods from different countries.  

Unit 4: Essential Content and Skills

  • Talk about pastimes and activities.
  • Describe school classes.
  • Apply the verb gustar to tell what other people like.
  • Recall and apply the words for the days of the week.
  • Recall and apply the names of the months and seasons and describe them using the verbs ser, gustar, and tener.
  • Compare the seasons and weather in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
  • Describe seasonal weather and activities.
  • Apply the verb hay to describe weather.
  • Apply landscape and habitat vocabulary to describe locations.
  • Apply the verb ser with de.
