Chinese II Part 1

Chinese II Part 1 is a second-level course to Modern Standard Chinese - Mandarin as the spoken language and simplified characters as the written language. Students will review Chinese I materials and continue learning Chinese vocabulary in Pinyin and Chinese characters. This course introduces an intermediate-level vocabulary and Chinese characters using scenario-based examples. Students will continue learning about Chinese tradition and society through social tips to become more familiar with Chinese language and culture.

It is recommended that students possess a solid understanding of the concepts covered in Chinese I or equivalent course work before enrolling in this course.

These courses include auditory comprehension assessments that require students to listen to audio files and to record themselves speaking. For these courses, it is essential that students have either a headset equipped with a microphone or access to an internal microphone within their computers.

Unit 1: Essential Content and Skills

  • Explore the tones in Chinese Pinyin.
  • Practice exchanging personal information in Chinese.
  • Utilize pronouns and possessive pronouns to create questions and statements.
  • Use and recognize numbers.
  • Ask questions about quantity.

Unit 2: Essential Content and Skills

  • Compare the usage of verbs in Chinese and English.
  • Use terms of endearment.
  • Utilize new vocabulary to discuss hobbies and occupations.
  • Discuss country of origin, nationality, and language.
  • Explain where you live.
  • Discuss family pets.

Unit 3: Essential Content and Skills

  • Use adverbial of place.
  • Recognize Chinese characters that indicate future events.
  • Discuss birthdays.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make phone calls and appointments.
  • Practice writing letters or emails in Chinese.
  • Practice making weekend plans with friends.
  • Discuss school subjects and classes. 

Unit 4: Essential Content and Skills

  • Discover how to use color words in Chinese.
  • Discuss buying school supplies.
  • Utilize measurement words correctly to discuss school items.
  • Ask and answer questions regarding pricing.
  • Describe colors and shapes correctly.
  • Utilize words with multiple meanings.
