French I Part 2

In French I Part 2, learners will build on their knowledge of the French language and Francophone cultures in order to effectively and meaningfully communicate in the target language. In addition to using the present tense to describe one's preferences and daily activities, learners will be able to use the passé composé and imparfait to present and exchange information regarding topics such as travel and occupation.
It is recommended that students successfully complete French I Part 1 or equivalent course work before enrolling in this course, which is a continuation of French I Part 1.

These courses include auditory comprehension assessments that require students to listen to audio files and to record themselves speaking. For these courses, it is essential that students have either a headset equipped with a microphone or access to an internal microphone within their computers.

Course Objectives

Unit 1: Essential Content and Skills

  • Discuss meals.
  • Utilize vocabulary to order a meal at a restaurant.
  • Express opinions about food and drink.
  • Utilize the imperative to give commands and make requests.
  • Utilize vocabulary to discuss shopping for clothing.
  • Explore the African nation of Senegal.

Unit 2: Essential Content and Skills

  • Utilize the passé compose to discuss past activities.
  • Utilize vocabulary to discuss shopping in a store.
  • Practice discussing activities that someone can do, must do, or wants to do.
  • Describe chores done at home.
  • View an episode of a video series to develop listening comprehension, and read about Senegalese fashion.

Unit 3: Essential Content and Skills

  • Describe one’s home.
  • Explain where things are in relation to other objects using prepositions.
  • Utilize the passé compose to discuss past activities.
  • Explore the south of France.
  • Utilize vocabulary to ask for and give directions.
  • View an episode of a video series to develop listening comprehension, read classified ads for housing, and compose a classified ad for a house or an apartment.

Unit 4: Essential Content and Skills

  • Ask questions using inversion.
  • Utilize vocabulary to make travel arrangements.
  • Explain places an individual goes or where someone is from using prepositions.
  • Employ the verb faire in idiomatic expressions.
  • Develop listening and reading comprehension by viewing an episode of a video series and by reading an excerpt of a novel by Jules Verne.
