Latin I Part 2

In Latin I Part 2, students will continue to read about the adventures of Cornelius and his family. Students will become familiar with more dative and ablative noun uses, as well as noun-adjective agreement. They will thoroughly review regular verbs, and they will learn future, perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect verb tenses and the forms of irregular verbs. Students will correctly use and translate various types of pronouns, and they will recognize fourth and fifth declension nouns.
It is recommended that students successfully complete Latin I Part 1 or equivalent course work before enrolling in this course.

These courses include auditory comprehension assessments that require students to listen to audio files and to record themselves speaking. For these courses, it is essential that students have either a headset equipped with a microphone or access to an internal microphone within their computers.

Course Objectives

Unit 1: Essential Content and Skills

  • Examine first and second declension noun-adjective agreement.
  • Examine the relationship between Latin numbers and English words.
  • Read and write Roman numerals.
  • Read Latin phrases containing noun-adjective pairs.
  • Identify irregular verbs.
  • Practice noun-adjective agreement with first, second, and third declension adjectives.

Unit 2: Essential Content and Skills

  • Read and translate third-person perfect tense verbs.
  • Recognize and translate first- and second-person perfect tense verbs.
  • Recognize and translate subordinate clauses with the conjunction dum.
  • Utilize and translate several uses of the infinitive.
  • Practice using and translating subordinate clauses and infinitives.
  • Recognize and correctly use the principal parts of verbs.

Unit 3: Essential Content and Skills

  • Recognize and translate the dative case.
  • Decide whether nouns are in the dative or ablative case.
  • Recognize and translate adjectives as substantives.
  • Recognize and correctly translate future tense verbs.
  • Recognize and translate datives with intransitive compound verbs.
  • Recognize and translate the ablative of cause.
  • Recognize and translate verbs in the pluperfect tense.

Unit 4: Essential Content and Skills

  • Recognize and translate fourth and fifth declension nouns.
  • Examine and translate the partitive genitive.
  • Recognize and correctly translate forms of hic and ille.
  • Recognize and translate datives with special intransitive verbs.
  • Utilize and translate first-, second-, and third-person pronouns.
  • Utilize and translate reflexive and possessive pronouns.
